We’ve been here as guests of the Oman Sail team, enjoying the 2021 Techno293OD Asian Championships. Oman is well known for its top-class sailing events, November sees the famous Mussanah Race Week, a full-on sailing week, which is followed by the 49ers, 49ersFx & Nacra17 World Championships. And their racing year will end with the World Sailing Youth World Championships, which will also be the last event of the year for the Techno293Plus Class.
You can see that they’re very busy, but the Oman Sail team have invested time, energy and money in trying to build a grass-roots windsurf culture in the country, and bringing a Techno event here is an important step along that path. And there’s everything you could possibly need more here in in Al-Mussannah, a purpose-built resort city west of the capital, Muscat, with great facilities for all kinds of sports, but especially water and board sports. Everything is modern and new, the sun is warm and the winds are good.
There’s been racing every day of the week and all the competitors have given their best shots in the hope of becoming the 2021 Asian Champion in the 3 classes racing: Techno293, Techno293Plus, and Formula Foil.
There’s no doubting the winner of the Techno Plus category, with 12 wins from 13 races, it’s congratulations to Abdullah Al Sarhi from Oman, the 2021 Asian Champion, ahead of his compatriots Omar Al Qartoubi and Ali Al Sarhi. The Techno 293OD Asian Champion 2021 is start-to-finish leader Abdulrahman Al Mujaini. Another silver medal for Oman with Mohammad Al Sarhi in second place, and big round of applause for India’s Sachin Ganesh who finished third. The Formula Foil contest was dominated by home boy Abdulmajeed Al Hadhrami, with Makhtar Al Mujaini second and Hammad Al Mujaini third.
Congratulations to all the competitors, and to the organisers and hosts, Oman Sail, for being part of this event. One thing is for sure in this uncertain world: we’ll be back!
